The Best Scholarships in Nevada

​Heading to college is an exciting time in life’s journey. It marks a milestone in the transition of being a teenager to an adult ready for the real world. The college application process can be a daunting one. There was a 3.7 percent increase in the cost of private school education and a 2.9 percent increase at public universities in the 2014-2015 school year according to The College Board.

With the cost of college rising each year exponentially, paying for your college education presents more of a challenge. Here are some scholarships tailored specifically for those from the great state of Nevada or who are attending schools in the state.

1. Daniel Scafidi Greater Nevada Athlete Award

This scholarship is available to students from Washoe, Nevada, who participate in athletics. Candidates are required to have a minimum 3.2-grade point average and demonstrate strength of character and commitment to teamwork. Applications are due on February 28th.

    2. Arnold/Jones/Evan Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to children of active or retired members of any local union affiliated with the Nevada State AFL-CIO. To apply, candidates must submit a minimum 1,000-word essay on the topic provided with the application. The essay along with high school transcripts and a statement of career goals should be included in the application. This year’s deadline is August 1, 2016.

    3. Jo Marshall Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to female residents of Nevada, who are registered Republicans. Candidates must be sponsored by Nevada Federation of Republican Women (NvrFRW) Club and have their application signed by the President and First Vice President of the sponsoring organization. The application should include transcripts, two letters or recommendation, and a biographical essay which describes a significant achievement of the applicant. This year’s deadline is September 1, 2016.

    • Value of Scholarship: $1,000 ($500)
    • Number of Scholarships Awarded: Five. Two first place awards of $1,000. One $500 award for a student from Northern Nevada. One $500 award for a student from Southern Nevada. One $500 award for a student from any part of Nevada. Awards are non-renewable.

    4. Horatio Alger Nevada Scholarship Program

    This scholarship is available to residents of the state of Nevada, who have displayed exceptional perseverance in overcoming adversity. To be eligible, candidates must demonstrate a critical financial need and involvement in co-curricular and community service activities. This year’s application deadline was June 1, 2016. However, additional requests will be reviewed after a July 1 and August 1st deadline.

    • Value of Scholarship: $35,000 (Paid in five installments of $7,000 each)
    • Number of Scholarships Awarded: Six
    • Eligible Applicants: High school seniors pursuing degrees at accredited non-profit public and private institutions.

    5. Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to those enrolled in a course of study which will lead to licensure in elementary or secondary education and who are committed to teaching in Nevada upon graduation. Students must have a minimum 3.5-grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Applications are due on April 1st of each year.

    • Value of Scholarship: Varies
    • Number of Scholarships Awarded: Two (one from Northern Nevada and one from Southern Nevada)
    • Eligible Applicants: Rising college seniors (or those in their final year of their college program)

    6. Fit for College Great Books Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to students who graduated from a high school in the state of Nevada or maintain residency in the state. Students must be pursuing a program which studies the Great books. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is in March.

    • Number of Scholarships Awarded: One
    • Eligible Applicants: Students ages 16 – 25 who graduated from a Nevada state high school or who maintain residency in the state.

    7. University of Nevada-Las Vegas - Hughes Valedictorian Scholarship

    This scholarship is available for students who graduated valedictorian from an accredited Nevada high school. This renewable award requires applicants to score a minimum 27 on the ACT and 1210 on the SAT exam. Applications are submitted via the financial aid process for the school and are due February 1st.

    This scholarship is available for undergraduate or graduate students attending the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, majoring in Urban, Outdoor, Therapeutic, or Commercial Recreation. Applicants must be members of Nevada Recreation and Parks Society with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applications are submitted via the application process for the school and are due February 1st.

    This scholarship is available to University of Nevada-Las Vegas students pursuing a degree in science. Applications are submitted via the application process for the school and are due February 1st.

    This scholarship is available to dependents of active or retired Clark County, NV firefighters, police officers, or highway patrol members. Applications are submitted via the application process for the school and are due February 1st.

    This scholarship is available to residents of certain Nevada counties who are enrolled in a five or six-year professional degree at a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) School of Architecture. Candidates should be prepared to include a budget along with their application package. The deadline for submitting applications is May 5th.

    12. Graham Erskine Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to residents of certain Nevada counties who are enrolled in a five or six-year professional degree at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) Department of Architecture. Applicants should be prepared to include a budget along with their application package. The deadline for submitting applications is April 1st.

    13. Endowed Fund Scholarship

    This scholarship is available for undergraduate students enrolled in the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration who intend to join the hospitality industry of Southern Nevada.

    This scholarship is also available for prospective and continuing students at the University of Nevada - Las Angeles. Applications are submitted via the application process of the school. The current student deadline is March 31st, while the deadline for prospects is February 1st.

This need-based scholarship requires candidates to have a GPA between 2.8 and 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Students must demonstrate financial need.     17. President’s Scholar Award

    This scholarship is available for students who will attend the University of Nevada-Reno. This 4-year scholarship is awarded from a pool of candidates who have a minimum 3.5-grade point average, score a minimum 31 on the ACT (or SAT equivalent) and meet certain admission requirements into MyNevada including paying the $250 admission fee before June 1.

    It is important to note that for test results to qualify, they must be reported before February 1.

    This scholarship is available for undergraduate students who are dependents of Station Casinos’ employees attending the University of Las-Vegas Nevada. Candidates must have a minimum 3.0-grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be enrolled in school full time. Applications are submitted via the application process of the school.     This scholarship is available to students located in NV Energy’s service territory. Eligible candidates must have completed at least 20 hours of community service in the prior year and have a minimum 3.0-grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Candidates should be prepared to submit an essay on the importance of community service and provide a resume highlighting their community service efforts. The deadline for submitting applications is March 15th.

    This scholarship is available to students who have a family member who has been an employee of Caesars Entertainment Property for a minimum of three years and an employee ranking no greater than L14. Eligible candidates must have a minimum 3.2-grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must have a minimum 24 ACT score or 1500 combined SAT score.

    29. Otto Huth Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to candidates who have aged out of the foster-care system. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0-grade point average and plan to attend school full-time at a Nevada school. Candidates must apply before their 20th birthday and be enrolled within 12 months of receiving the scholarship. Applicants should be prepared to provide two essays in addition to two letters of recommendation. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15th.

    This scholarship is available to degree-seeking students pursuing careers in the fields of public works, public administration, or related private enterprises (i.e., business architecture, science, etc.) Students must present a financial need and meet academic requirements as outlined by the program. The deadline to submit applications is April 28th.

    This scholarship is available to female residents of northern Nevada. Preference is given to those attending an institution in Northern Nevada. Students must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and take at least six credits per semester.
