Typically, a minimum of a master’s degree in speech-language pathology is required to become a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP). While an associate’s degree may be a starting point for your education, you would need to pursue a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in speech-language pathology to meet the licensing requirements.

Additionally, completing a specific number of supervised clinical hours and passing a national examination are often necessary steps in becoming a certified SLP.  Fortunately, you will be able to work in a variety of settings with your SLP degree, including in a hospital. 

There are several schools in Texas that offer both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in speech-language pathology.  We found some that offer the opportunity to participate in the choir, too!  They include:

Best Texas Colleges for Aspiring Speech-Language Pathologists with Strong Fine Arts Programs

Since you’re interested in both speech-language pathology (SLP) and joining a choir, you’ll want a university that offers a strong communication sciences program and an active fine arts department. These Texas schools stand out:

1. Texas Christian University (TCU) – Fort Worth, TX
   • Offers a reputable program in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
   • Has a well-established School of Music with numerous choir and ensemble opportunities.
     
2. University of North Texas (UNT) – Denton, TX
   • Known for its strong undergraduate and graduate programs in speech-language pathology.

What Would You Major In to Become a Speech Pathologist for Children in a Hospital?

You should pursue a Bachelor’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) or a closely related major. This degree provides the essential prerequisites for admission to a master’s program in speech-language pathology, which is required for clinical certification and licensure. Working in a hospital, particularly with children, typically requires completion of both undergraduate and graduate training.

Should You Go Straight Into a Speech Pathology Bachelor’s Program?

Yes. Starting with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders is the most direct and efficient path to becoming a licensed speech-language pathologist. It will cover the foundational coursework needed for graduate study and ensure you’re on track for future licensure and certification.

When Should You Start Applying?

Start applying during the fall of your senior year in high school. Some universities have early action or priority deadlines in November or December, which can improve your chances for admission and scholarships. Make sure to request transcripts, teacher recommendations, and test scores well in advance.

Additional Speech Pathology Programs in Texas to Consider

Abilene Christian University offers a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders and an MS in SLP at the Abilene or Dallas campus. The early application deadline is November 1.  Music is at the heart of ACU and they offer an outstanding choral program.  The program is open to both music and non-music majors, so you should definitely check it out! 

Texas Christian University offers a BS in speech-language pathology.  Applications are due by Feb 1 for transfer students planning to enroll in the fall.  There are opportunities for non-music majors to participate in choir.  For men, there is the Frog Corps and for women, Cantiamo. 

Texas Woman’s University offers a BS in Communication Sciences.  New students are admitted once each year for the fall semester.  Applications are accepted between January 1^st and April 1^st.  TWU does offer a women’s concert choir open to students of any major.  Other opportunities for non-music majors include an Operate Ensemble and the University Choir.  University Choir does not require an audition.

Other outstanding programs include Lamar University and Stephen F. Austin State University.  While these schools don’t appear to offer a choir program to non-music majors, they are excellent schools for SLPs.

Lamar University offers a BS in Speech and Hearing Sciences and an MS in SLP.  You can apply for the program in any semester.  You should plan to have your prerequisite coursework completed by the spring of your sophomore year.  While Lamar does have a choir program, it appears to be open to students pursuing a degree in music.

Stephen F. Austin State University has a BS in Communication Disorders.  You need to have at least 30 credit hours to apply and a minimum GPA of 2.75.  Their website says the deadline for fall applications is November 1st, and the deadline for spring is April 1st.  They also offer a MS in SLP.  While SFASU does offer a choir program, it also appears to be open to only music majors.
