The program is small, the city is in a rural setting, and students here aren’t overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the city. Life runs at a slower place in Carbondale and so does school.

That’s not to say that the program isn’t fantastic, though: It just doesn’t run at the same gears as Chicago. Students enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s master’s in rehabilitation counseling program take excellent classes and have access to wonderful fieldwork experience. They can also matriculate as a doctoral candidate in the school’s rehabilitation program.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is one of the more affordable options on this list. Students can also benefit from:

We won’t blame you if the first thing you notice about Western Washington University is its Pacific Oceanfront location and pristine views of the North Cascades. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful campus locations on this list. The school’s master’s program in clinical mental health counseling is not too shabby either. Students usually complete this program in two years under a full-time format.

• a statement of purpose
• university transcripts

Note that the GRE isn’t required if you already hold an advanced degree.
