Frequently Asked Questions
A typical fitness and personal trainer degree at a public university costs around $26,000 per year, on average. Several factors can raise or lower this price. In-state students pay much less for tuition than out-of-state students. Public university students also typically pay less than private school students. The number and amount of scholarships, grants, and other financial aid you receive also affect the overall costs of your degree.
A fitness and personal trainer degree is worth it because it prepares you to help others lead healthier lives. Not only is this rewarding for your clients, but it’s also rewarding for you to make a positive difference in how other people live. Other benefits of studying fitness and personal training include the following:
• Increased income potential
• Preparation for certifications
• Preparation for starting your own business
• Ability to specialize (e.g., strength and conditioning, weight loss, athletic training, etc.)
Additionally, jobs in this field are expected to grow at a 14 percent rate in the coming years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A bachelor’s degree prepares you for the job market and will help you start your career.
A full-time student can complete a fitness and personal trainer program in four years. This timeline assumes you complete 24-30 credits each academic year. You can graduate sooner if you take summer classes or an increased course load during the fall and spring semesters.
A bachelor’s in fitness and personal training is a science-based bachelor’s degree. It often includes coursework in areas like Exercise Science, Kinesiology, and Physical Education. You’ll also take courses like Nutrition, Wellness, and Human Anatomy. Many fitness degrees require an internship or a capstone project, which provides you with real-world experience working as a trainer. Many degrees in this field require you to study on campus, though there are a growing number of online fitness and personal training programs.
You’ll need around 4.5-5 years to complete a bachelor’s degree and a certification program. Alternatively, you can forego a bachelor’s degree and complete a certification on its own. Doing so typically requires less than a year of courses to become a personal trainer.
Many highly respected organizations offer certifications in personal training. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) are popular options. Other certifications are available from the following organizations:
• International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)
• American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
• National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF)
• National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
A personal trainer certification is worth it because it legitimizes you as a professional. You gain expanded skills and a deeper knowledge of your profession that helps you provide improved services to your clients. Certified personal trainers can also make more money than non-certified trainers and are usually preferred by employers. If you’re self-employed, being certified allows you to market yourself as such, which can help you get more clients.
Many fitness and personal trainer graduates go on to become fitness educators, sports performance coaches, and specialists in strength and conditioning. You can become a certified personal trainer or an exercise instructor, to name a couple more options.
You can perform these jobs in many different settings, too. Fitness and personal trainer experts work in corporate settings, commercial fitness centers, and school settings. You can also work as a fitness instructor or personal trainer in rehabilitation centers, for professional sports teams, or work for yourself as a gym owner.
The median annual wage for fitness trainers and instructors is $45,380 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The top ten percent earn more than $80,000, and the lowest ten percent earn less than $24,000 per year. With a bachelor’s degree, the pay range is around $59,000-$69,000 per year.
Health educators and community health workers make an average of $59,990 per year. The pay range varies widely, though, with the top bracket making more than $106,000 per year and the lower bracket making just over $37,000. Athletic trainers make around $53,840 per year. However, your salary largely depends on where you work, your education and experience, and if you have any certifications. The greater your experience and training, the more money you will make.
